Around fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state early analysis show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A senior official said the attack made him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack in 2020," he stated on online, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
