The Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we picked up meals, found a table, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
