Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
